Holidays to Thailand under £1000

These are the resort areas where good-value hotel stock makes budget stays most realistic.

• Pattaya: Pattaya sits roughly two hours by road from the capital and offers one of the widest ranges of mid-range hotels on the Thai coast. Competition between properties keeps room rates sensible outside the busiest weeks, and the resort's water parks give families and couples plenty to do without paying premium prices. We recommend it as a strong budget base, though you should expect a livelier atmosphere than quieter coastal towns. It is exactly the brief our Thailand holidays deals are built around.
• Khao Lak: Khao Lak in Phang Nga province has calmer, gently shelving beaches and a cluster of smaller, quieter resorts that tend to price more modestly than the big names further south. Its proximity to the national park adds value for guests who want nature without paying for a longer stay elsewhere. The trade-off is fewer nightlife options, which suits most budget travellers who prioritise rest and scenery. It is exactly the brief our Cheap Thailand Holidays deals are built around.
• Ao Nang: Ao Nang is the gateway town for Krabi's limestone scenery and offers a good spread of guesthouses and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the beach. Boat trips to nearby islands are readily available, which lets you fill days with excursions rather than paid resort activities. Its prices can climb during the drier season, so we suggest booking early or travelling in the shoulder months to stay within budget. • Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand's largest city, has a large supply of inexpensive hotels, guesthouses and boutique options within its old walled centre. Cultural attractions such as the temples of the old town and the mountain temple of Doi Suthep cost little to visit, which keeps daily spending low. Because it is inland, it is a different kind of holiday from the beaches, and we recommend it for travellers who want culture and mountain views on a modest budget.
• Koh Samui: Koh Samui has a broad range of family resorts and mid-priced hotels, and its airport offers direct flights from the Thai capital, which keeps onward travel simple. Competition among resorts helps keep room prices reasonable compared with more remote islands. Because the island is well developed, you will find more choice in restaurants and transport, though beachfront rooms command higher rates than those set back from the coast.
