Thailand Holidays in January

January is a strong month for beach holidays, with calmer skies and dry conditions across several coastal resort areas.

• Phuket: Phuket is Thailand's largest island and a major beach destination, with a wide choice of hotels, beaches and nightlife. In January the Andaman coast enjoys the dry season, which makes sea days and sunset dinners more dependable than during the rainy months. Its international airport has direct flights from the capital city, which keeps onward travel simple. We suggest it for travellers who want a lively resort with plenty of choice in accommodation. • Koh Samui: Koh Samui is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and a well-established resort destination with a range of beaches and hotels. Its airport allows direct flights from the capital, which makes it one of the easiest island bases to reach. Ferries from its Nathon pier link it to neighbouring islands for those wanting to explore further. We recommend Koh Samui for resort comfort and a straightforward island base, including family-friendly options. See Thailand family holidays.
• Khao Lak: Khao Lak, on the Phang Nga coast, has calm, gently shelving beaches and quieter resorts that suit a relaxed stay. Jungle excursions into the surrounding national park are easy to combine with beach time, offering a welcome change of scenery without long journeys. The area is less crowded than the big island resorts, which is a clear benefit in January. It is a sensible choice for families and couples who prefer a calmer coastline.
• Krabi: Krabi is known for dramatic limestone cliffs rising from the sea and beaches such as Railay, which is reached only by longtail boat. The January dry season makes boat trips to nearby islands and rock climbing sessions far more reliable than in the wetter months. Access to Railay depends on the boats, which adds a short crossing to every visit, but that is part of its appeal. We recommend Krabi for adventure travellers and anyone wanting scenic beaches. • Ao Nang: Ao Nang is the main resort strip on this stretch of the Andaman coast and offers a practical base for beach days and boat trips. Its restaurants and hotels are well suited to travellers who want easy access to the sea and to the wider limestone scenery. January conditions favour boat excursions to the islands nearby. We suggest it as a convenient, social base for a beach-led holiday on the Andaman side.
