Booking self catering holidays to Thailand means paying for accommodation with a kitchen or kitchenette, so you prepare most of your own meals rather than relying on a hotel restaurant. This suits families, long-stay travellers and anyone keen to save on dining out, as you can shop at busy local markets for fresh fruit, fragrant rice and seafood.

Self catering in Thailand means renting accommodation where you have a fridge, cooking facilities and space to store fresh produce, then shopping locally for ingredients at morning markets and neighbourhood stalls. It is a flexible way to travel because you can eat breakfast at your own pace, prepare simple lunches after a morning on the beach and enjoy a quiet evening meal without booking a table or rushing to beat the crowds. Flexibility pays off.

The practical reason to book with us is that we check the detail that matters most for a self catering stay. We look at whether the kitchen has cookware, utensils and a fridge big enough for the week's shopping, how far the nearest supermarket or market is on foot or by car, what transport links reach the beach, and whether good restaurants are nearby for a relaxed night off from cooking. Every property is inspected in person before it is listed.

Why Book Self Catering Holidays to Thailand

Varied landscapes

The country moves from the mountains around Chiang Mai to the limestone karsts of Krabi within a single trip. Each region feels distinct, so you rarely run out of new scenery. Travellers often comment that the contrast is the highlight.

Temple heritage

Bangkok's Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha sit at the centre of the Thai capital. Ayutthaya, the former capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 80 km north of Bangkok. Together these sites tell a long story of Siamese kingdoms.

Island choice

Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui offer very different island characters within easy reach of one another. Phuket is the largest island and has an airport with direct flights from Bangkok. Koh Samui has its own airport, which keeps resort transfers simple.

Food culture

Street food is central to daily life, and dishes such as pad Thai and som tam are sold almost everywhere. Northern specialities like khao soi show how regional the cooking can be. Eating well here rarely costs a great deal.

Easy internal travel

Bangkok is served by the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro, which make city days straightforward. Domestic flights link the capital with island and northern airports. Longer journeys by train or bus are also well established, and most routes run daily across the country, giving you flexibility to adjust plans as you travel.

Range for every budget

You can spend freely on boutique resorts or keep costs modest with guesthouses and local eating. The variety of stays means you can match the trip to your budget. Our team will explain what each option includes before you commit.

Your Guide to Self Catering Holidays to Thailand

These areas combine well-stocked markets, supermarkets and a good range of restaurants with apartment and villa stock that suits cooking at home.

Hua Hin: Hua Hin is a long-established beach town south of the capital where self catering works well because of its large markets, several supermarkets and a dense choice of seafood restaurants along the seafront. Apartments and villas here often include full kitchens, which makes it easy to buy fresh fish in the morning and cook at home in the evening. The main trade-off is that the town feels more relaxed than the big island resorts, so nightlife is limited, but for a self catering stay that is part of the appeal. We recommend it for travellers who want a calm base with reliable shopping close by. It is exactly the brief our Thailand holidays deals are built around.
Pattaya: Pattaya sits roughly a couple of hours from the capital by road and has a wide range of apartments with kitchens, along with large supermarkets and a huge variety of restaurants. Self catering here is convenient because you can cook most meals at home and still walk to lively evening food streets whenever you fancy eating out. The downside is that the beach area can feel busy and noisy, so choosing a quieter building away from the main strip makes a real difference. We think it suits families and groups who want practical facilities alongside plenty of choice. It is exactly the brief our Cheap Thailand Holidays deals are built around.
Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai is a northern city where self catering is especially rewarding, thanks to its excellent fresh markets, cookery-friendly apartments and a dense network of cafes and restaurants within easy reach. The city is cooler than the coast for much of the year, so longer stays in an apartment with a kitchen feel comfortable and practical. Because it is inland, you will not have beach access on the doorstep, and day trips to the mountains take time. We recommend it for travellers who value culture and cooking as much as sun and sea.
Koh Samui: Koh Samui has a well-developed island infrastructure with a good airport, large supermarkets in the main towns and a strong choice of villas with private kitchens. Self catering here allows you to shop at the island's markets for tropical fruit, seafood and fresh herbs, and then enjoy simple meals on your own terrace after a day on the beach. The trade-off is that villas can be spread out, so you may need a scooter or taxi for supplies. We suggest it for travellers wanting resort-level facilities with the independence of cooking their own food. It is exactly the brief our Thailand All Inclusive Holidays deals are built around.
Phuket: Phuket is the largest island and offers one of the widest choices of self catering apartments and villas, many with pools and full kitchens. Shopping is excellent, with major supermarkets around the island and busy local markets in the old town, so cooking at home is easy and affordable. The island's larger beaches can get crowded in peak season, so choosing a property in a quieter bay improves the stay considerably. We think it works well for families and longer stays where a well-equipped kitchen matters. It is exactly the brief our Thailand Luxury Holidays deals are built around.

The islands offer a strong mix of beaches and self catering stock, though shopping and transport between properties need more planning than on the mainland.

Koh Lanta: Koh Lanta is a quieter island reached by ferry from Krabi, with long beaches and a laid-back atmosphere that suits self catering well. The island has small supermarkets and local markets, and many bungalows and apartments include kitchens for preparing meals at home. Its quieter character means fewer restaurants than the big resort islands, so you will cook more often. We recommend it for couples and families who prefer calm beaches and a simple daily rhythm. It is exactly the brief our Thailand Beach Holidays deals are built around.
Koh Yao Noi: Koh Yao Noi is a low-key island in Phang Nga Bay, reached by ferry, with scenic villages and beaches that attract visitors wanting a quiet stay. Self catering here is practical because local shops stock basic groceries, and many guesthouses have kitchens or cooking facilities. The island has far fewer supermarkets than the big resort islands, so planning shopping trips in advance is essential. We think it is ideal for travellers who want seclusion and are happy to shop with care.
Koh Chang: Koh Chang is Thailand's second-largest island, sitting in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border and reached by ferry from Trat. The interior is covered in dense jungle with waterfalls and walking trails, while the west coast offers quieter beaches like White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach. Accommodation ranges from beachfront bungalows to larger resorts, and there are small convenience stores and local markets for basic supplies, though options are more limited than on the larger islands. Getting around usually means a songthaew or motorbike, so planning transfers in advance is sensible. For travellers after a relaxed island escape with jungle scenery and a slower pace, it is exactly the sort of trip our Thailand Last Minute Holidays deals are built around.
Koh Phangan: Koh Phangan is easily reached by ferry from the neighbouring island to the south-west and offers quieter beaches, a relaxed pace and an increasing number of apartments and bungalows with kitchens. Shopping is limited to small local stores and a few larger outlets, so you will need to plan supplies carefully. The island is well known for its nightlife in some areas, but many self catering properties sit on calmer stretches of coast. We suggest it for independent travellers who value space and simplicity over convenience.
Koh Tao: Koh Tao is a small island reached by ferry from the mainland, known for clear water and a relaxed atmosphere that suits quieter self catering stays. Groceries and fresh produce are available in small shops, and some guesthouses and apartments include kitchens. Because the island is compact, supplies run out faster than on bigger islands, so buying in bulk on arrival helps. We think it works well for short self catering breaks where the sea is the main focus.
