Thailand Holidays in December from the UK

UTC +07:00Thai Baht (THB)Thai

Thailand is a strong choice for December holidays, as its cool, dry season runs roughly November to February. Humidity drops, beach days are easier to plan, and Chiang Mai and Pai feel crisp in the mornings. Travelodeal can bundle flights, transfers and hotels into one protected package, leaving you free to enjoy sunshine, markets and festive cheer.

December sits at the peak of the country's most comfortable travel window, when the sky is clearer and the sea is generally calmer than in the monsoon months. Cities are busy with visitors, and riverside dining, night markets and temple complexes stay open in full swing. Southern islands and the Andaman coast also tend to be at their most reliable for swimming and snorkelling, though sea conditions can shift daily, so flexible plans are worth making.

We put our Thailand holidays in December together with the practical details UK travellers need most. Our team checks flight schedules, transfer timings and resort room types before confirming your booking, so you are never left piecing the trip together yourself. We also highlight entry rules, passport validity and health advice to review before departure, since these can change quickly, and we are always very happy to talk through your options.

Why Book Thailand Holidays in December

Varied landscapes

The country moves from the mountains around Chiang Mai to the limestone karsts of Krabi within a single trip. Each region feels distinct, so you rarely run out of new scenery. Travellers often comment that the contrast is the highlight.

Temple heritage

Bangkok's Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha sit at the centre of the Thai capital. Ayutthaya, the former capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 80 km north of Bangkok. Together these sites tell a long story of Siamese kingdoms.

Island choice

Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui offer very different island characters within easy reach of one another. Phuket is the largest island and has an airport with direct flights from Bangkok. Koh Samui has its own airport, which keeps resort transfers simple.

Food culture

Street food is central to daily life, and dishes such as pad Thai and som tam are sold almost everywhere. Northern specialities like khao soi show how regional the cooking can be. Eating well here rarely costs a great deal.

Easy internal travel

Bangkok is served by the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro, which make city days straightforward. Domestic flights link the capital with island and northern airports. Longer journeys by train or bus are also well established, and most routes run daily across the country, giving you flexibility to adjust plans as you travel.

Range for every budget

You can spend freely on boutique resorts or keep costs modest with guesthouses and local eating. The variety of stays means you can match the trip to your budget. Our team will explain what each option includes before you commit.

Your Guide to Thailand Holidays in December

December brings the most comfortable weather across much of the country, though the warmest and driest conditions tend to be found in the lower-lying central and southern areas.

Koh Lanta: Corfu Town is one of the warmest places to be in December, with the sea still holding late-autumn warmth and mild afternoons often reaching the mid-teens. Wander the Venetian old town, browse its lanes and enjoy a leisurely lunch in the sunshine while the rest of Britain is wrapped in winter coats. It is exactly the brief our Thailand Beach Holidays deals are built around.
Bangkok: Bangkok stays warm through December, with dry days that suit long walks around the Grand Palace and riverside temples. The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro make it easy to move between districts without relying on traffic-heavy roads. Evenings are pleasant for street food and dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya. It works best as a city stay before or after a beach extension.
Phuket: Phuket is the largest island and enjoys its driest weather from November through to early spring, so December is well suited to beach days and boat trips. The island has a wide choice of hotels, from family resorts to adults-only properties on the western beaches. Its international airport is well connected to the Thai capital by frequent flights, which keeps onward travel simple. Expect busy beaches and higher prices around the holiday period.
Ayutthaya: Ayutthaya, the former capital sitting just north of the city, is a good December day trip because the dry season makes exploring open ruins far more pleasant. The UNESCO-listed historic site can be reached by train from the capital in a relaxed morning. Cycling between temples is practical when the air is cooler and drier. We suggest it as an add-on to a city stay rather than a destination in its own right.
Khao Sok National Park: Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province is a rainforest reserve with a large reservoir and limestone cliffs, and December is one of the better months for jungle trekking. Floating accommodation on the lake is a memorable option for a night away from the coast. Trails can still be muddy in places, so sturdy footwear is essential. It suits nature lovers who want a change of scenery from the beach.

Thailand's beach resorts are at their most reliable in December, with the dry season bringing calmer seas and sunnier skies to many of the country's coastlines.

Khao Lak: Khao Lak on the Andaman coast of Phang Nga province has calm, gently shelving beaches that suit families and those wanting a quieter stay. Rainforest trails in the nearby hills can be combined with time by the sea, making it easy to balance adventure and relaxation. Resorts here are generally smaller and more low-key than those found on the island's busier neighbours. We would recommend it for families and for anyone who values space over nightlife. Krabi (Ao Nang and Railay): Krabi's Ao Nang area offers a practical resort base with easy access to the limestone cliffs and islands that define the coastline. Railay peninsula is reached only by longtail boat, a short crossing that adds to the sense of arrival. December conditions are generally settled, making island hopping and climbing trips more dependable. It suits adventurous couples and active travellers. Koh Samui: Koh Samui is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand and a well-established resort destination with direct flights from the capital. December is part of its dry period on the Gulf side, so beach time is generally more comfortable than during the monsoon months. Family resorts and adults-only hotels both have a strong presence across the island. It is a good choice for travellers wanting resort comfort with an easy island base. It is exactly the brief our Thailand All Inclusive Holidays deals are built around.
Pattaya: Pattaya lies roughly two hours by road from the capital and combines beach areas with water parks and attractions suited to children. Its hotels are easy to reach from the city, which makes it convenient for shorter trips. The town is busy in December, so booking ahead of the festive period is wise. It works well for families wanting a lively base close to the city.
Koh Yao Noi: Koh Yao Noi is a quiet island set in Phang Nga Bay, lying just across the water from the main island to its west and the mainland province to its east, with scenic villages and gentle beaches. Its low-key atmosphere means fewer crowds than the larger resort islands during the peak weeks. Transfers involve a boat crossing, so plan your arrival time with care. It appeals to couples and travellers seeking a slower, more private beach stay. It is exactly the brief our Thailand Luxury Holidays deals are built around.
