Mild temperatures hold through the year, with winter coastal days usually around 18 to 21 °C. That makes the islands a dependable choice whenever you need a break from grey skies back home. Spring and autumn offer particularly comfortable conditions for walking and exploring.
Each island has its own scenery, from the volcanic plains of Lanzarote to the laurel forests of La Gomera. Teide National Park on Tenerife is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Spain's highest peak sits within it. You can swap a beach day for a mountain walk without leaving the island.
Direct flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria take around 4 hours 30 minutes from London. That makes the islands one of the quicker warm-weather options for a short break. Journey times are simple enough for a long weekend as well as a full week.
Inter-island ferries link several of the islands, so you can combine two bases in one trip. Schedules vary, so check timetables before you plan. Buses also connect towns on each island, which keeps getting around straightforward. Allowing a spare half day for travel will help your plans run smoothly and without rushing.
You can stay in large beach resorts, small historic towns or quiet villages depending on your preference. The range of accommodation covers families, couples and solo travellers. Many visitors find that a mix of resort and village stays gives the best balance of activity and rest. Each island offers something different for each type of traveller.
Sheltered beaches, calm water and marinas are spread across the islands. Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas is protected by a natural reef. The sea is inviting even outside peak summer, making swimming a realistic daily activity for most visitors.

Resorts give a solo traveller easy access to restaurants, beaches and other visitors, so the right choice depends on how social you want your days to be.
Each island has its own character, and a solo traveller can pick one for its landscape, pace or walking routes rather than simply its beaches.
The best island depends on your plans, but Tenerife and Gran Canaria offer the widest mix of resorts, towns and transport links for independent travellers. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura suit visitors who want beaches and quieter villages, while La Gomera and El Hierro reward walkers who enjoy slower, more natural surroundings. Think about whether you want nightlife, hiking or calm before choosing.
