Weather in Morocco in August

Higher ground and the northern coast offer noticeably milder conditions than the inland south during the summer.

• Chefchaouen: Chefchaouen sits in the Rif Mountains and is typically milder than the imperial cities in August, with cooler evenings that make walking the blue-painted lanes a real pleasure. The elevation brings welcome relief from the lowland heat, and the compact medina is easy to explore on foot at any hour. Many travellers choose Morocco family holidays built around a mountain base like this for the gentler climate. The trade-off is that the town is smaller and quieter than the big cities, so it suits travellers seeking a slower pace rather than lively nightlife.
• Ifrane: Ifrane is a small town in the Middle Atlas, and its altitude keeps August temperatures well below those of the inland plains. The Alpine-style architecture and surrounding forests create a cooler environment that many travellers find genuinely restful after a hot journey. Ifrane is best suited to those who want a quiet retreat from the heat, although its services are more limited than those of the larger cities nearby.
• Ouzoud Falls: The Ouzoud Falls in the Middle Atlas drop a considerable distance and benefit from the spray and shade of the surrounding gorge. Cooler air near the water makes this a refreshing day trip in August, particularly for travellers worn out by the lowland heat. The path can be steep in places, so comfortable footwear is advisable, and visiting in the morning gives the most enjoyable experience of the day.
• Tafraoute: Tafraoute is set in the Anti-Atlas at a higher altitude than the desert towns to the south, which gives it milder conditions through the summer months. The painted boulders and valleys offer shaded walking routes on cooler mornings and evenings that feel very different from the lowlands. Its remoteness is the trade-off, with fewer facilities than the coastal resorts, but it rewards walkers who prefer quieter landscapes and unhurried days.
• Asilah: Asilah is a whitewashed fortified town on the Atlantic coast, close to the northern port, where the sea breeze keeps August more comfortable than inland Morocco. The colourful medina and street murals are pleasant to explore during the cooler hours, and the ramparts give open views over the water. It is quieter than the imperial destinations, which suits those wanting a relaxed coastal base with an easy rhythm.
