Winter Sun Holidays to Canary Islands

Clean, well-managed beaches on the islands are a strong reason many winter visitors choose the Canaries.

• Playa de las Teresitas: Playa de las Teresitas sits on the north-east coast of Tenerife, a short drive from Santa Cruz, and its golden sand was brought in from the Sahara to create a wide, sheltered beach. The water stays calm thanks to the breakwater, which makes it a dependable choice for swimming and paddling when the trade winds pick up elsewhere. We recommend it for guests who want a clean beach close to a capital city, rather than a resort strip with bars stacked along the sand. It is exactly the brief our Tenerife holidays deals are built around.
• Playa del Inglés: Playa del Inglés runs for several kilometres along the south coast of Gran Canaria, backed by hotels and a long promenade that stays busy through the winter months. Its wide sand and reliable sunshine make it one of the most accessible beaches in the archipelago for families and couples alike. The trade-off is that the central stretch can feel crowded at weekends, so we often suggest staying a little further along the coast for more space. • Playa Blanca: Playa Blanca is a resort town in the south of Lanzarote with sandy beaches and a relaxed seafront that suits winter stays. Ferries run from nearby ports to Fuerteventura, which makes it a sensible base for guests who want to combine two islands without constant packing. It is calmer than the busier towns to the north, so we tend to recommend it to travellers who value quiet evenings and easy access to the water. • Corralejo beaches: The beaches around Corralejo on the north tip of Fuerteventura stretch for long distances beside the dunes of the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park. Some of the bays have gentle shallow water, which is why this stretch is often recommended for families with younger children. The wind is more frequent here than on the southern coasts, so guests who want guaranteed stillness may prefer a sheltered cove, but those seeking open sand and dunes will find little to match it. • Playa de Las Canteras: Playa de Las Canteras is an urban beach in Las Palmas, the largest city in the Canary Islands, and it is protected from the open Atlantic by a natural reef. The water inside the reef is calm and shallow, which makes it particularly suitable for children and nervous swimmers. Because it sits in the city, you can walk from the sand to restaurants and shops, and we often pair it with a stay in town for a fuller winter break.
