Weather in Thailand in May

The hottest and most humid conditions in May are typically felt across the lowland central plains and the cities that sit on them.

• Bangkok: Bangkok is typically at its hottest and most humid in May, when dense streets and concrete hold heat well into the evening. Temperatures run high through the day, so we suggest planning temple visits such as the Grand Palace for the early morning and saving air-conditioned malls and museums for the afternoon. Short showers can arrive as the month progresses, bringing welcome relief. For culture and nightlife the city remains a strong choice if you pace your days. It is exactly the brief our Thailand holidays deals are built around.
• Ayutthaya: Ayutthaya sits north of the capital on flat, open ground where the ruins offer little natural shade, so the May heat can be intense when exploring the historic park. The site is reachable by train, so many visitors make it a day trip, and we recommend starting early by bicycle or tuk-tuk. Carry water and plan to rest in the middle of the day. The atmospheric ruins remain rewarding, though the heat is a real trade-off.
• Kanchanaburi: Kanchanaburi lies to the west and is typically hot in May, though the surrounding hills and forest provide slightly more shade and moving air than the city. The waterfall pools of the nearby national park can be a welcome cool-down when temperatures peak, and it is a popular excursion. We would suggest visiting the falls mid-morning, before crowds and the afternoon heat build. This is a practical option for those who want a break from the capital.
• Pattaya: Pattaya experiences typically hot and humid May weather on the Gulf coast, with sea breezes offering some relief on the shoreline. Its water parks and hotel pools provide shade and cooling options, which is why it suits families during hot spells. Afternoon showers can arrive without much warning, so flexible planning helps. We find it works well for those who want easy access to attractions and a lively seafront.
• Phetchaburi: Phetchaburi is an inland town in the central region where May tends to be hot and dry, with humidity building as the wet season approaches. Its hillside temples and historic sites are often visited in the cooler morning hours, and the surrounding countryside offers a quieter alternative to busier coastal resorts, the same brief our Cheap Thailand Holidays deals are built around. Accommodation options are more limited than on the islands, so we recommend checking room air-conditioning in advance. It is a worthwhile detour for travellers who prefer a slower pace.
