May Half Term to Thailand

These are the areas we consider most reliably warm and dry for a May half term visit.

• Koh Samui: Koh Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand, which means it often sees a different weather pattern from the Andaman coast during the early part of the year. Its airport allows a direct connection from the capital, so reaching the island takes far less time than a long overland journey. The sea is generally calm for swimming, and the resorts along its beaches are well equipped for hot afternoons. We think it is one of the most dependable bases for a warm, straightforward week. • Phuket: Phuket is Thailand's largest island and has an international airport with direct flights from the capital, which makes it simple to reach. Its beaches and hotels give you plenty of shade, pools and dining options when the midday heat is strongest. Expect busier resort areas than on smaller islands, which many travellers enjoy for the choice of restaurants and activities. For a dependable hot-season beach week, we rate it highly. • Krabi: Krabi's dramatic limestone cliffs rise straight out of the sea, and its beaches make a striking base for a warm week. Reaching the most distinctive areas often involves a short boat ride, which adds a memorable element to the trip. Plan your days around the heat by mixing boat tours in the morning with pool time in the afternoon. We find it suits travellers who want scenery and a bit of adventure alongside their sunshine. • Bangkok: The capital is the most straightforward arrival point, with international flights and fast public transport around the city. The temples and museums give you indoor and shaded options on the hottest days, while the river offers breezes in the evening. The city is busy and humid, so it works best as a short stay before or after a beach section. We recommend it as a warm, practical starting point for many itineraries.
• Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai in the north is surrounded by mountains, which can make its evenings noticeably cooler than the coast. The old walled city and its many temples offer plenty of shaded walking and cultural interest. Days can still be hot, so early starts for sightseeing make sense. For families and couples wanting a calmer, cooler change of pace, we think it complements a southern beach stay well.
