October Half Term to Thailand

Coastal and island bases in the south generally offer the most dependable warmth during October, though rain can arrive in short, heavy bursts.

• Koh Samui: Koh Samui is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand, and its east-facing side sits in a different rainfall pattern from the Andaman coast. That makes it a sensible choice when you want warm sea and comfortable evenings in October. Direct flights from the capital give you an easy connection to the island, so you spend less of your week in transit. We would suggest it for families who value a reliable beach base over dramatic scenery. It is exactly the brief our Thailand holidays deals are built around.
• Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai sits in the north and is surrounded by mountains, so its climate is milder and cooler than the coastal resorts. October days remain warm but the evenings are noticeably more comfortable for sightseeing. The old walled city and its many temples are easy to explore on foot or by tuk-tuk. It is a strong choice if warmth is important but you also want a break from heavy humidity.
• Khao Lak: Khao Lak lies on the Andaman coast in Phang Nga province and is set beside Khao Sok National Park, which gives the area a green, sheltered feel. Its gently shelving beaches are calmer than many busier resort stretches, and the coast tends to stay pleasantly warm through the middle of the year. The trade-off is that you will need a short transfer to reach the main attractions. It suits families who prefer a quieter, more relaxed base.
• Ayutthaya: Ayutthaya is a historic city about 80 km north of the capital, and its ruins are largely outdoors, which makes the heat a factor on a typical October day. Mornings are the best time to explore the UNESCO-listed temples before the afternoon warmth builds. It is easily reached by train from the capital city, so it fits neatly into a stay in the city. We would plan it as a single day out rather than a base of its own.
• Pattaya: Pattaya is roughly two hours from the capital by road and has a long-running reputation for hotels, water parks and attractions that suit children. Its warmth is consistent through October, and the wide beach areas make it straightforward to plan a family week around sun and activities. Because it is close to the capital, it is a practical choice for shorter transfers. It works best for families who want plenty of organised things to do.
