New Year to Canary Islands

These locations offer the most dependable winter sun over the festive week, so they are worth comparing before you choose a base.

• Puerto de la Cruz: Puerto de la Cruz lies on the island's northern shore, offering a gentler, greener atmosphere than the sunnier southern side. Winter days here are mild and pleasant, though the north-facing coast can turn cooler when the trade winds roll in. This resort appeals to travellers seeking warmth without the high-rise bustle of the south. Its black-sand beaches and historic streets make a relaxed New Year base, and we think it is the right choice for anyone who values atmosphere over constant sunshine. The resort sits close to the protected dunes, so guests can walk out onto the sand in the late afternoon without a long journey. Evenings are easy and the seafront is lively enough for a festive meal out. It is a strong pick for travellers who want dependable warmth and a relaxed resort routine over the holiday period. The town offers sandy beaches and a calmer pace than the bigger resort areas, which many couples and small groups prefer over the New Year period. Ferry links to the neighbouring island from the northern port on the island's opposite coast make it simple to explore a second island without much effort. • Corralejo: Corralejo, at the northern tip of the Canary Islands' easternmost desert-like isle, combines long sandy beaches with some of the most open, windy and sunny conditions in the archipelago. The village sits beside the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, which makes it an unusual and striking setting for a winter stay. The wind suits water sports, although it can feel brisk on the coast, so pack layers for evenings. For guests who like wide beaches and a fishing-village feel, it delivers strong winter sunshine and a clear sense of place.
