Cheap Couples Holidays to Canary Islands

Each island offers a different mix of landscape and atmosphere, and the right choice depends on how you like to spend your days together.

• El Hierro: El Hierro is the smallest and most westerly of the main Canary Islands and carries a UNESCO biosphere reserve designation, which points to a quiet, carefully managed landscape. It is one of the least developed islands, so accommodation options are fewer and flights are less frequent than to the larger islands. That limited supply can make it harder to find a cheap deal at short notice, so it pays to plan ahead, much as you would with any of the wider Canary Islands holidays on offer. For a couple who wants a slow, unhurried break and is willing to plan ahead, it is a rewarding and genuinely different choice.
• Los Cristianos: Los Cristianos on the south-west coast of Tenerife is a busy, sheltered harbour town with a long promenade, a fast ferry link to La Gomera and easy access to the island's sunniest beaches. Families and couples who want reliable sunshine and plenty of cafés close at hand will find it an easy base. Expect a livelier atmosphere than the quieter villages further north, with ferry and bus timetables worth checking before you travel. It is an excellent pick for a holiday that balances relaxation with convenient day trips across the Canary Islands. • Teguise: Teguise, the former capital of Lanzarote, sits in the island's interior and is known for its charming colonial-style streets, whitewashed houses and a lively Sunday market that draws visitors from across the island. Couples can wander its quiet squares, sample local cheeses and enjoy a relaxed lunch at a terrace café at modest prices. The town is a short drive from the coast, so a hire car or taxi is useful, which adds a daily cost. For those who enjoy history and photography, it offers a rewarding day on a modest budget. • Fuerteventura: Playa Jandía in the south of Fuerteventura is a long stretch of sand with a wind-exposed coast and a choice of quiet hotels and small restaurants. It is one of the more affordable beach bases on the island once you look beyond the most upmarket properties. Distances between hotels and services can be significant, so car hire is often sensible. It suits couples who want wide open beaches and are happy to drive for their meals and days out. It is exactly the brief our Canary Islands Beach Holidays deals are built around.
• La Graciosa: Caleta de Sebo is the main village on La Graciosa, the smallest inhabited Canary Island, reached by ferry from Órzola on Lanzarote and largely free of cars. Accommodation is limited and simple, which keeps costs modest but means you should book early. The ferry trip is a small added expense and depends on the timetable. For a couple who wants an inexpensive, almost car-free escape, it is one of the most distinctive options in the archipelago.
